Shopify B2B Without Plus: What Works After B2B for All

Native B2B is on every Shopify plan now. The question shifted from “can we?” to “will three catalogs and market-level pricing hold — or do we still need Plus?”

Short answer: Shopify B2B without Plus is real native product as of April 2026 — not an app stack. Basic, Grow, and Advanced get companies, catalogs, quantity rules, net terms, and self-serve ordering. The hard ceiling is three active B2B market catalogs (no direct company catalogs) and no Plus-only payment tools like deposits or partial payments. Start native. Upgrade when pricing complexity outgrows three catalogs.

02. What non-Plus B2B includes

Shopify’s B2B for all rollout put the foundation on every plan. For most wholesale starts, that means you can skip the password storefront and the “wholesale app tax” and use the same admin your DTC team already lives in.

Plan matrix that matters for the “without Plus” decision (condensed from Shopify’s B2B plan features):

FeatureBasic / Grow / AdvancedPlus
Companies & locationsIncludedIncluded
Active B2B catalogsUp to 3 (across all B2B markets)Unlimited
Direct company / location catalogsNo — market catalogs onlyYes
Quantity rules & volume breaksIncludedIncluded
Net terms, reminders, vaulted cardsIncludedIncluded
Deposits, partial payments, per-fulfillment requestsNoYes
Contextual storefront & checkout (Markets)Advanced onlyYes

Non-Plus catalogs need the new Shopify Markets. Assign catalogs to B2B markets, not to named companies — that is the structural difference that catches teams who think “three catalogs” means “three VIP accounts.”

03. Where it breaks (and Plus still wins)

The foundation is generous. The ceiling is sharp. These are the failure modes we see after brands leave the honeymoon period:

  • More than three price books or region-specific wholesale lists — the active catalog cap is shared across every B2B market
  • One-off negotiated pricing per company that cannot be expressed as a market catalog tier
  • Deposits on first orders, partial payments, or payment requests tied to each fulfillment
  • Storefront and checkout that must look different for B2B vs DTC when you are still on Basic or Grow (contextual Markets needs Advanced or Plus)
  • ERP or CRM that expects company-level catalogs as the source of truth, not market-level assignments

Plus is not “B2B exists.” Plus is unlimited catalogs, direct company and location assignment, and the payment tools wholesale finance teams ask for. If your buyers are fine sharing a small set of market price books, stay. If every large account wants its own book, Plus usually costs less than inventing a parallel pricing system.

Building the buyer-facing experience itself — login, quick order, theme, ops — is a separate job from the plan choice. That is covered in our Shopify B2B portal guide.

04. Apps and the old wholesale channel

Wholesale apps still have a job: unusual approval workflows, deep linesheet UX, or bridging a migration. They are no longer the default path to “have B2B on Shopify.” If you are installing an app only to hide retail prices and show a second price list, try native companies and catalogs first.

The legacy wholesale channel (password storefront) is the same story. Useful as a temporary holding pattern; a poor long-term portal. New builds should start on native B2B so company data, terms, and orders stay first-class in the admin and in whatever you connect next.

05. Stay or upgrade

Stay without Plus when wholesale is a handful of tiers that fit three market catalogs, net terms cover how buyers pay, and someone on the team can still own exceptions as draft orders.

Upgrade when any of these are true:

  • You are about to deactivate a catalog just to free a slot for another market or tier
  • Sales keeps asking for per-company catalogs that Markets cannot assign on your plan
  • Finance needs deposits or partial payments as a standard rule, not a one-off invoice
  • You are on Basic or Grow and B2B needs its own contextual storefront or checkout

We map catalogs, companies, and systems before anyone signs a Plus contract — the same work described on our Shopify B2B service page.

06. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do Shopify B2B without Plus?+
Yes. Since April 2026, Basic, Grow, and Advanced include native Shopify B2B: companies, company locations, up to three active B2B market catalogs, quantity rules, volume price breaks, net payment terms, vaulted cards, draft-order invoices, and self-serve reorders. You no longer need Plus — or a wholesale app — to start.
What is the 3-catalog limit on non-Plus plans?+
On Basic, Grow, and Advanced you can assign up to three active catalogs across all B2B markets. Using three catalogs on one market consumes the whole limit. Catalogs are assigned to B2B markets, not directly to individual companies. Shopify Plus removes the cap and adds direct company and location catalogs.
What Shopify Plus B2B features am I still missing?+
Unlimited B2B catalogs, catalogs assigned directly to a company or company location, deposit requirements, partial payments, and payment requests per fulfillment. Advanced and Plus also get contextual storefront and checkout via Markets; Basic and Grow do not.
Is the old Shopify wholesale channel still the answer?+
No. The password-protected wholesale channel was the pre-native workaround. Native B2B companies and catalogs replace that model for almost every new build. Keep a channel-style setup only if you are mid-migration and have not switched buyers to company logins yet.
When should we upgrade to Plus for B2B?+
When three market catalogs cannot cover your price tiers, when buyers need company-specific catalogs, when deposits or partial payments are part of how you sell, or when ERP sync assumes per-company pricing that Markets catalogs cannot express cleanly.

Three catalogs enough — or already too tight?

We map your price tiers, markets, and buyer orgs against the native B2B limits, then tell you whether Shopify B2B without Plus still fits.
