Case study

85% subscription retention on a built-from-scratch storefront

Freddybean Roasters is a specialty coffee roaster expanding from local wholesale and cafe sales into direct-to-consumer e-commerce. eSolve built Freddybean Roasters a complete online storefront with subscription commerce, wholesale portal integration, and the operational infrastructure to ship fresh-roasted coffee across Canada without sacrificing quality or margin.

The Challenge

Specialty coffee has unique operational requirements that generic e-commerce platforms do not handle well. Coffee is roasted to order, has a freshness window, and ships in quantities that create weight-break complexity. Subscription customers expect flexibility around delivery timing and blend rotation.

Freddybean Roasters also needed to maintain their wholesale business alongside DTC, which meant supporting two very different buying experiences without doubling operational overhead.

The Solution

We built Freddybean Roasters as a unified commerce platform serving both consumer subscriptions and wholesale accounts from a single operational backend.

Subscription commerce designed for coffee

The subscription system supports flexible frequencies, blend rotation, and grind preferences. Customers can skip shipments, swap products, or adjust quantities without contacting support. Roast-date freshness guarantees are built into the fulfillment workflow.

Wholesale portal for B2B accounts

Wholesale customers access a separate storefront with net terms, volume pricing, and reorder workflows designed for cafe and restaurant buyers. Both channels share inventory and fulfillment systems.

Shipping logic optimized for coffee weight breaks

Coffee bags hit carrier weight breaks at awkward quantities. We built shipping logic that calculates accurate rates, suggests add-on products that ship free, and routes orders to the most cost-effective carrier automatically.

Email flows that drive retention and referral

Post-purchase education, brew guides, and origin stories keep subscribers engaged between shipments. Referral programs and loyalty points turn satisfied customers into acquisition channels.

The Results

Freddybean Roasters operates a unified commerce business serving DTC subscribers and wholesale accounts from the same platform. The subscription model provides predictable revenue, the wholesale portal maintains existing relationships, and the operational infrastructure scales without adding headcount.
