Products with variants and inventory, customer contact records, order history, and your content all move. What does not transfer automatically: product images, which Squarespace excludes from its export, account passwords, which no platform exports, product reviews, which Shopify states cannot be migrated from Squarespace, and gift cards and subscriptions, which must be re-issued and rebuilt. We plan each of those explicitly rather than discovering them at cutover.

Not through the export, and this is the step that catches people. Squarespace's product CSV excludes featured images, variant images, and alt text entirely. We recover images from the live store directly and reattach them to the right products and variants in Shopify, with alt text rebuilt for accessibility and search. Budget for this step in any quote you compare, because a migration priced without it is not the same job.

Not if redirects are engineered properly. Squarespace uses /shop/p/ product URLs while Shopify uses /products/, so every URL changes and each needs a 301 redirect to its exact successor. We build the full map and verify it after launch. It matters that Shopify's built-in redirects only fire on URLs that would otherwise 404 and cannot cover certain reserved paths, so the map has to be designed around the tool's real behavior rather than assumed onto it.

Yes, either by transferring the registration to Shopify or keeping it registered where it is and pointing DNS at Shopify. Transfers involve unlocking the domain and an authorization code, and timing matters so email keeps flowing. Domains inherited from Google Domains live inside Squarespace's registrar now and follow the same process, and any email forwarding attached to the domain needs a new home before the switch. We sequence it so nothing bounces.

Yes. Squarespace exports orders to CSV, including totals, statuses, and billing and shipping addresses, and we import that history into Shopify attached to the right customer records. Reporting, lifetime value, and support lookups survive the move. What Squarespace cannot export is customer passwords, so returning customers securely reset on first login with their history already waiting.

They do not survive a platform change automatically, so both are planned migrations. Outstanding gift card balances are re-issued as Shopify gift cards so no customer loses value. Subscriptions are rebuilt on a Shopify subscription app, and subscribers are migrated with their billing handled deliberately, communicated clearly, and timed so nobody is double-charged or silently cancelled. This is the part of the project we sequence most carefully.

For a store that is now the business, usually yes; for a website with a few products attached, often no. Squarespace remains excellent at what it is: a beautiful site builder with commerce included. The move makes sense when checkout flexibility, shipping logic, apps, subscriptions, or channel feeds have become the constraint.
