symptoms
The problem
“We upgraded to Plus and nothing changed except the invoice.”
Checkout extensibility, Functions, native B2B, and LaunchPad are what the fee buys. Unimplemented, Plus is the same store with a larger subscription line.
“Checkout is where we lose people and we cannot touch it.”
Standard plans lock the checkout. The revenue sitting in address validation, delivery logic, and post-purchase offers stays locked with it.
“Wholesale runs on spreadsheets next to a store built for DTC.”
Order forms over email, manual invoicing, and rep phone calls, while the B2B capability you are already paying for sits switched off.

What you get
The readiness math first, then the features that justify the fee.
Plus readiness assessment
weeks 1-2Which plan limits you actually hit, what the fee gap costs against what extensibility earns, run on your numbers in writing.
Checkout extensibility
Checkout UI extensions for upsells, custom fields, and validation, replacing anything that previously lived in checkout.liquid.
Native B2B implementation
Company profiles, price lists, payment terms, and a wholesale portal with zero third-party apps.
Shopify Functions
Discount stacking rules, shipping and payment logic compiled into checkout, replacing script workarounds and app fees.
Flow and LaunchPad automation
Operational workflows, tag hygiene, and scripted launches so drops and sales run without a war room.
Migration to Plus
Plan upgrade or full replatform with rehearsed cutover, redirect mapping, and zero-downtime discipline.

Shopify Plus Implementation and Development FAQs
What is Shopify Plus?
Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier of Shopify. The commerce engine is the same; what changes is access: a customizable checkout with UI extensions and Functions, native B2B with company accounts and price lists, automation through Flow and LaunchPad, up to ten expansion stores, and higher API limits with dedicated support. It exists for brands whose growth is constrained by the standard plans, not as a status upgrade.
How much does Shopify Plus cost?
Shopify publishes Plus at 2,300 US dollars a month on a three-year term or 2,500 a month on a one-year term, moving to variable revenue-based pricing for the largest merchants. The license is usually the smaller number in the decision. Implementation determines payback: an unimplemented Plus store returns nothing on the fee gap, while checkout customization, native B2B, and automation typically return multiples of it.
When should we upgrade to Shopify Plus?
The reliable triggers are concrete, not revenue folklore: you need to change checkout behavior and cannot, wholesale has outgrown apps and spreadsheets, you are opening additional markets or storefronts, automation ceilings cost real staff hours, or API limits throttle your integrations. If none of those are true yet, the honest advice is to stay on your current plan and spend the difference on growth.
Is Shopify Plus worth it?
Worth it is arithmetic, not opinion. Take the fee gap between your current plan and Plus, then price the specific capabilities you would implement in the first year: checkout conversion work, B2B order automation, discount logic without apps, staff hours returned by Flow. If that list beats the gap, upgrade. If the list is empty, Plus is an expensive badge, and an agency that says otherwise is selling you their retainer.
How do we upgrade to Shopify Plus without breaking the store?
The plan change itself is a sales conversation and a billing switch; themes, products, and apps carry over. The work is in what you do next: checkout customizations must be rebuilt as UI extensions and Functions since checkout.liquid is retired, app stacks get rationalized against native features you now own, and B2B setup is a proper implementation project. Plan for a staged rollout, not a flip.
Do we need a Shopify Plus agency, or can we do it in-house?
You do not need an agency to switch plans. You need one, or serious in-house developers, to extract the value: checkout extensions, Functions, and B2B configuration are engineering work with real failure modes around taxes, payments, and inventory. The test for any partner, us included, is whether they start from the readiness math and tell you plainly when staying on your current plan is the better answer.
