agentic_commerce

The next customer at your checkout is an agent.

AI agents are starting to browse, compare, and buy on their owners’ behalf. Agentic commerce is the work of making your Shopify store reachable to them: every capability an agent needs, exposed as data it can read and act on.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is online buying carried out by AI agents acting for a person: the agent discovers products, compares them, and completes the transaction, instead of the person clicking through a storefront themselves. The buyer sets the intent and the budget; the agent does the shopping.

It matters because it changes what wins. A storefront persuades a human with design, photography, and copy. An agent never sees any of that. It sees your product data, your prices, your availability, and your checkout, and it acts on whichever store exposes them most reliably. The brands preparing now are not betting on a trend; they are cleaning up the same catalog data that already drives search, feeds, and marketplaces.

The agentic commerce journey, from discovery to transaction

Three stages, and your store is either reachable at each one or it is not in the running.

01 · discovery

The agent finds candidates

A buyer describes what they need. The agent reads catalogs, specs, availability, and reviews, and shortlists products it can verify. Catalogs it cannot parse are not in the running.

02 · decision

The agent compares on facts

Price, dimensions, compatibility, lead time, return terms. No brand feelings, no hero banner. Whichever catalog states checkable facts wins the comparison.

03 · transaction

The agent completes the purchase

Emerging standards such as the Agentic Commerce Protocol and agentic payments let an agent build a cart and pay on the buyer’s behalf. Stores with clean checkout and current data are the ones this works on.

the_readiness_work

From app tangle to one agent-readable layer

Protocols like the Universal Commerce Protocol and the Agentic Commerce Protocol assume your store can answer for itself. The readiness work is unglamorous: one source of truth for products, pricing, and inventory, exposed cleanly instead of buried under app scripts.

agentic_payments

Agentic payments, without the leap of faith

Payments are where agentic commerce gets real: standards from the major payment networks and platforms are emerging to let an agent pay with mandated limits and full auditability. Our position is deliberately boring. We keep your checkout native and standards-adjacent rather than bolting on a proprietary agent checkout, so when your platform switches these rails on, your store qualifies on day one instead of queuing for a rebuild.

questions

Straight answers about agentic commerce

Is this just SEO with a new name?

It overlaps, and we will not pretend otherwise: clean structured data and crawlable content help both. The difference is the target. Traditional SEO optimizes to win a click from a results page. Agentic commerce optimizes so a machine can extract, quote, and recommend your product accurately inside an answer, often without a click at all. That shifts emphasis from keywords and links toward data completeness, factual accuracy, and machine-readable formats.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?

No, and nobody can. These systems do not expose ranking controls, their behaviour changes without notice, and recommendations depend on the phrasing of a prompt we do not control. What we can do is remove the technical reasons you are excluded or misquoted: missing schema, wrong prices, incomplete attributes, unreadable specifications. Think of it as being eligible and accurate rather than guaranteed placement.

How do we measure whether this worked?

Three ways, and none of them is a ranking report. First, a documented baseline of how assistants currently answer your key buying questions, re-run over time. Second, referral traffic from assistant surfaces, which is increasingly identifiable in analytics. Third, technical completeness metrics such as schema validity and feed attribute coverage, which we can measure directly. The first is qualitative by nature, so we record it as evidence rather than dressing it up as a metric.

Is it too early to invest in this?

It depends on your category and margin. The honest position is that assistant-driven traffic is still small for most brands but growing, and nearly all the underlying work is worth doing regardless: accurate schema, complete feeds, and extractable specifications also improve conventional search, marketplace performance, and merchant feed approval rates. If your catalog data is already excellent, waiting is reasonable. If it is not, this is the same cleanup you needed anyway.

What actually stops an assistant reading our catalog today?

Usually four things in the same order. Specifications trapped in images, so no crawler can extract an attribute. Missing or invalid Product and Offer schema, so prices and availability are guesses. Incomplete identifiers such as GTIN or MPN, which break matching against known products. And stale cached content quoting prices you no longer charge. The audit ranks these by how much each is costing you.

Do we need a PIM system for this?

Not to start. For most catalogs under a few thousand SKUs, Shopify metafields plus disciplined data entry are sufficient, and adding a PIM is premature cost. A PIM starts earning its keep when you sell across several channels with different attribute requirements, manage multi-language product content, or have product data originating in an ERP that needs enrichment before publishing. We will tell you which side of that line you are on rather than selling a system you do not need.
